SADIE'S JOURNEY: FROM

FEAR TO CONFIDENCE

When Sadie first joined Learning to Listen, she was terrified of horses. She didn’t want to go near them, let alone work with them. Her fear wasn’t just about their size, it was a fear of the unknown and a need to feel in control.

So, we took things slowly. Together, we explored what was behind her worries, giving her time, space, and reassurance. We began with simple observation, standing safely outside the field and watching the horses interact. Sadie became curious about their behaviour, the small non-verbal cues they used to communicate, and how they showed their feelings through body language rather than words.

As she watched, she began to see herself in them. She noticed how a horse might behave in different situations and started to recognise and understand her own emotions in a new way, and gradually, her fear started to shift into interest.

At Sadie’s pace, never rushed, we took the next step: spending quiet 1:1 time with a horse. Over time, she learned that before she could connect with the horse, she needed to connect with herself. This became one of her biggest breakthroughs.

With gentle guidance, Sadie developed confidence in being with and later handling the horses, leading them, grooming them, and reading their signals. She realised how much her own energy and behaviour influenced theirs. Through these moments, she learned about boundaries, respect, and the power of non-verbal communication.

Sadie didn’t just gain new practical skills, she grew in self-awareness and self-belief. She discovered that she could face her fears one step at a time, and that by understanding herself, she could build meaningful connections with others too.
